CRRUA Board Authorizes Temporary Relief for Customers Impacted by Federal Government Shutdown

The Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) Board of Directors has approved temporary relief measures to support customers experiencing financial hardship caused by the recent federal government shutdown. The policy allows for the temporary suspension of disconnections for those directly affected, waives late fees for those directly affected and allows impacted customers to make payment arrangements.

This action aims to provide short-term financial relief to community members who experienced loss or delay of income as a result of federal employment interruptions, contractor furloughs, or suspension of federally funded assistance programs.

“We know the government shutdown created uncertainty for many households,” said Executive Director Juan Carlos Crosby. “Our team wants residents to know we’re paying attention, we care, and we’re taking steps to lessen the pressure on those affected.”

Under the approved resolution, eligible customers include:

  • Federal employees furloughed or who worked without pay
  • Federal contractors temporarily unpaid due to the shutdown
  • Households receiving delayed or reduced federal benefits (e.g., SNAP, WIC, TANF.)
  • Other individuals demonstrating verified financial hardship directly related to the shutdown

Customers  must provide proof of impact, such as a federal employee ID, pay stub, furlough notice, benefit delay notice, or other reasonable documentation accepted by CRRUA Customer Service staff.

The temporary suspension of disconnections and penalties will remain in effect up to thirty-one (31) days after its official conclusion to allow time for financial recovery.
