Water service has been restored to Sunland Park’s Hacienda neighborhood following the completion of repairs to a broken water main.
“This was a massive repair given the difficult location of the break,” said Juan Crosby, executive director for the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA). “A high water table made standard repair efforts extremely challenging, so we had to initiate an emergency repair procedure to fast-track the services of a drilling contractor to remove water from the site of the broken line, a process called dewatering, to allow us access to make the repair.”
The line break occurred 12-feet underground on July 25, 2025, on Boy Scout Lane near the Futurity Drive intersection.
The drilling contractor installed two temporary well points, each with 10 horsepower submersible pumps, to drop the water table at the immediate area of the broken pipe. Each well was drilled to a depth of 60 feet.
“The complexity of this repair required a substantial amount of time, and I thank the affected customers for their patience and cooperation,” Crosby said.
CRRUA updated customers throughout the process with notifications posted on the CRRUA and city of Sunland Park websites and Facebook pages.
Boy Scout Lane will remain closed overnight and for an unspecified period tomorrow to backfill the hole where the repair occurred, plug the well point holes and clean the road.
With water service restored, residents may notice discoloration due to naturally occurring minerals in the distribution system. CRRUA recommends waiting for the water to become clear before washing laundry. The discoloration should disappear within 24 hours. If it does not, residents should run cold water for several minutes.
